WHAT IS SOUND MEDICINE?

Sound moves in waves that permeate. Whether explored in a home environment or utilized alongside clinical treatments, sound-based therapies offer gentle, non-threatening support for individuals, families, and communities. In addition to providing deep relaxation, sessions can be tailored to relieve stress, reduce pain, process difficult emotions, improve memory, strengthen communication, speed physical recovery, and ease transitions.
Sound is a primary sensibility that guides both human function and navigation. Since the beginning of civilization, people have invoked the power of sound to transform conscious experience. Sound works at the neurological, physiological, and psychological level, as the vibrating wave-forms bring about changes in the body, mind, and spirit. This altered state opens the gate to connection, creativity, and healing.

WHY MUSIC MATTERS:

  • Music makes us human. We're primed from birth to detect and respond to rhythm, sound and music.  Music is often noted as the first impression to form, and the last impression to leave. From a developmental perspective, music actually precedes language! Music also connects us to each other socially, over time and across space.
  • Music empowers change. People experience shifts in breathing, heart rate, and body sensations when they listen to particular sounds or songs. Music also has the power to reduce blood pressure, improve brain function, facilitate self-expression, promote healthy digestion, increases attention span, and supports immune function by lowering stress.
  • Music moves emotion. Music is notorious for helping people tap into their feelings. It imitates the tonal characteristics of the human voice, which stimulates our fundamental communication pathways. It also stirs memories, and associated emotions that have yet to be expressed.
  • Music builds memory. When listening to music, the mind can be encoded with images, ideas, and vivid memories. People with memory loss and/or brain injury can use music to regain access these memories; music also fosters awareness of the present moment, their environment, and fellow human  beings.
